Seattle University Soccer Student Athlete of the Week

Junior defender Renee Vandermause was recognized as SU's Featured Student-Athlete of the Week following a standout weekend of action in Southern California. Two days after scoring the game-winner for the Seattle University women's soccer team at UC Irvine, Renee Vandermause (Colbert, Wash.) earned her first Featured Student-Athlete of the Week honor on GoSeattleU.com. The junior defender has become an impact player this season seeing action in all four games played this year at outside defender, including making a pair of starts.

"Renee had a great pre-season, and has played significant minutes and contributed in every game thus far," said head coach Julie Woodward. "She is an amazing student, athlete and very well liked and respected by her teammates. She had a real solid weekend for us and lifted us to victory with an amazing game-winning goal against Irvine. I am excited for her and the season that lies ahead."
The Redhawk veteran has developed into a strong role on the team, contributing solid work during her minutes on the field and being the squad's biggest cheerleader when she is on the bench. Against UC Irvine on Aug. 29, she subbed into the game in the second half. After SU tied the game 1-1 at the end of the first period, she found the back of the net for the first time of her career. Seattle U took a corner kick, which the Anteater backline attempted to clear out. Vandermause controlled the ball off the UCI deflection out of the box and slammed in the game-winning goal from 20 yards out.
In addition to giving the team the go ahead goal and game-winner, teammate and senior captain Kara Kuttler expressed the impact Vandermause had on the game, saying that she won the game for the team before she was even on the field. Her teammates were able to hear her cheering on the sidelines, encouraging them to battle back after going down early, and when she entered the game she helped lift the team to their second consecutive victory.
A complete student-athlete, Vandermause currently boasts a 3.631 cumulative grade point average as a civil engineering major with a focus on environmental engineering. She is a member of the Society of Women Engineers and Engineers Without Boarders.
Vandermause and the Redhawk soccer team will return to action this Friday, Sept. 3, as they travel to Cheney, Wash. to take on Eastern Washington in a 4:30 p.m. match. Two days later they will return home to host the WCC's Gonzaga Bulldogs in a 1 p.m. contest at Championship Field.
